4D Locate Solutions Inc. is a growing utility locating, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), and infrastructure data services firm supporting major infrastructure, municipal, and private development projects across Ontario. We provide high-quality utility field investigations, digital deliverables, and compliance-driven documentation for engineering, construction, and asset-management clients.
We are currently seeking an experienced Utility Survey Technician to support our expanding hybrid locating-and-survey support operations.
This position is ideal for a utility locator, civil technician, or survey field technician who wants to apply their technical skill set into high-accuracy utility data collection and CAD-based deliverables.
Role Overview
The Utility Survey Technician performs field utility investigations and spatial data capture to support utility mapping, Quality Level B (QL-B) investigations, and facility locate documentation.
The role bridges traditional utility locating with survey-grade positioning and CAD-based drafting. You will work alongside licensed surveyors, engineers, and senior SUE specialists, but this role does not require a surveying licence and does not perform boundary or legal surveying.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations
- Perform utility locating using electromagnetic (EM) equipment and related technologies
- Identify and trace underground utilities in accordance with CCGA Best Practices and CAPULC Underground Facility Locating and Marking Standards
- Conduct survey-grade spatial capture of utility features using GNSS, robotic total stations, and related instruments
- Collect field data for Quality Level B (QL-B) utility investigations
- Document surface features, valve boxes, pedestals, manholes, and other utility appurtenances
- Maintain detailed field notes, sketches, and digital data logs
- Coordinate with project managers, survey crews, and engineering teams
Data & Drafting
- Import field data into AutoCAD or Civil 3D
- Prepare utility base plans, overlays, and as-built drawings
- Apply proper symbology, layers, and line types for utility mapping
- Support the production of SUE and utility mapping deliverables
- Perform quality control checks on collected data
Safety & Compliance
- Follow corporate and client-specific safety and locate procedures
- Maintain safe work practices in active roadways, construction sites, and utility corridors
- Ensure strict adherence to OHSA regulations and practices
- Ensure field and drawing documentation meets project and regulatory standards
Required Qualifications
- Experience as a DPT/Utility/Facility Locator, Utility Technician, and/or Survey Technician
- Working knowledge of underground utility systems (gas, electric, water, sewer, telecom)
- Experience with electromagnetic locating equipment
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar CAD software
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence and clean driving record
- Strong attention to detail and documentation quality
- Ability to work outdoors in all seasons
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with GNSS, total stations, or data collectors
- Background in civil engineering technology or geomatics
- Experience with Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) projects
- Knowledge of CSA Z247, ASCE 38-02 / 38-22, and CCGA Best Practices
- Experience working with engineering or surveying firms
